Who we are

Lantern is a Mac app that plays the Quran and shows its meaning in English. It and this website are made by Md Sohel, an independent developer based in Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand 827001, India. Md Sohel decides how information is handled here, which makes him the Data Fiduciary under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and the data controller under the GDPR.

Questions, privacy requests and grievances all go to support@lanternislam.com. That address is also the grievance contact required by Indian law.

The short version

Lantern has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting and no tracking of any kind. Your choices in the app stay on your Mac. We never learn who you are, what you listen to or how you use it.

What stays on your Mac

Lantern saves a handful of settings on your Mac only: your default reciter, whether sounds are on, whether it opens at login, and the surah and verse you were on. They are never sent anywhere.

It also keeps a copy of the Quran text, translation and reciter list it has downloaded, in the Library folder of your user account, so it opens quickly and works without a connection after the first time.

What travels over the internet, and to whom

Lantern connects to the internet for three things, and sends no personal information in any of them. As with any internet connection, the server it reaches sees your IP address and the request itself.

Quran text, translations and the list of reciters come from Lantern’s own database, hosted by Supabase. The requests carry no identifier for you; Supabase keeps ordinary server logs under its own terms.

Recitations stream directly from the Quran Foundation’s audio servers (verses.quran.com and download.quranicaudio.com), which see the request for the recitation being played.

About once a day Lantern checks lanternislam.com for a newer version, using Sparkle, the standard updater for Mac apps. The check sends the app’s name and version, nothing about you.

Supporting Lantern

Lantern is free. If you choose to support it, the Support button opens our page on Buy Me a Coffee (https://buymeacoffee.com/r00kexe) in your browser. Buy Me a Coffee and its payment providers handle the payment under their own privacy policies; we never see your card details. We receive what Buy Me a Coffee shares with creators, such as the name, message and email address you give it, and use that only to see and thank supporters.

This website

This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics and contains no tracking or advertising. The Lantern you can try on the home page runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing.

The site is delivered by its hosting provider, which processes ordinary request information (your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time) to deliver pages and block abuse. We do not use those records to identify visitors.

Email

If you write to us, we keep the conversation so we can help you, for up to a year after it ends, and use it for nothing else.

Children

Lantern is suitable for all ages. Because it has no accounts and collects no personal information, it collects none from children either.

Selling and sharing

We do not sell personal information, share it for advertising, or combine it with information from anyone else. We would disclose information only if a valid legal order required it.

Your rights

Everything Lantern keeps is on your own Mac, and removing the app removes it (the Support page explains how). For anything we hold, such as an email conversation or a supporter record from Buy Me a Coffee, you can ask to see it, correct it or have it deleted, and withdraw any consent you gave.

Write to support@lanternislam.com; we reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India or, in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, to your national supervisory authority.

Changes

If what Lantern collects ever changes, this policy will change first, with a new date at the top. Questions can go to Md Sohel at support@lanternislam.com, or by post to Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand 827001, India.
